Highlights 2002 Buzz on Biz Camp...
   
Monday  

On Monday, three guest speakers shared their knowledge of the world of business. Campers met at Bremer Bank for part of their morning activities and later were escorted on a tour of the inner workings of the local Wal-Mart. Tammy Peterson, commercial loan officer for Bremer Bank, explained the characteristics banks look for when lending to entrepreneurs.

Heath Copp, owner of Pergamon Enterprises, Inc. shared his experience of starting and maintaining a business. Mr. Copp's company manufacturers bedcovers and bedliners for pickups.

Campers were treated to lunch at the Radio Grill at Wal-Mart

Rob Smith, store manager of the Grand Forks Wal-Mart led campers on a tour of his store. He explained many aspects of running a store, including inventory promotion of products and customer service.

Tuesday  

Dennis Elbert, dean of UND's College of Business and Public Administration (CoBPA) answered questions
about marketing, what it is and how to do market research.

Christi Stonecipher talked about starting her own business (Creative Greetings) and the role of creativity and innovation. She showed campers how to use her business software to make personalized candy bar wrappers.

Through various team and individual activities, campers learned the importance of planning and thinking outside the box.

Wednesday  

Campers learned the importance of knowing the customer and creating a niche.

Marijo Deitz Whitcomb of Deitz Business Promotions, Inc. talked about the importance of marketing and promoting a business.
Sixteen year old, Stephanie Robinson spoke about how she started her own online business, Computers Unlimited.
Thursday  

Learning about contribution margin...


 

Attorney Bruce Byars was Thursday's guest speaker. He talked about the legal aspects of starting and owning a business.

Campers and leaders enjoyed a
picnic lunch!

Team building exercises challenged campers to work together to solve fun problems, like getting the whole team on a tiny island of paper.
Thursday Night
After a busy day of preparation for the big sale, the campers were treated to a trip to Planet Pizza!


The team then assembled at
Wal-Mart to sell the products they had created during the week.
* Friday *  

Tom Rerick of the Small Business Development Center spoke about the
resources the center offers to entrepreneurs of ALL ages.

Ryan Meyer is a venture consultant for UND's Center for Innovation. Mr. Meyer
talked about the importance of having a business plan.

The Wrap-Up
Campers reviewed their sales statistics and discussed lessons they had learned from the experience. Campers were treated to a graduation luncheon with their parents. A commencement ceremony for the young entrepreneurs followed.
   
Graduation  
Cheryl Gaddie was this years's commencement speaker. Ms. Gaddie owns an interior design firm called CC Plus Interiors. In her address, Ms. Gaddie stressed the concept -- "always consider the other person." She called it a good rule in life and in business. She also encouraged campers to be diligent in their education. "Learn all you can!"
